Frates also cited her own example and said she was unaware about people living in her neighborhood but made multiple friends when she started taking her dog out for a walk.
Initially, Frates started taking her dog out during early morning and then developed a friendship with other dog owners. They spent time chatting, while their pets enjoyed running and playing with each other. After few days, this bond developed into a strong friendship.
In order to find more convincing answers on this topic, researchers from WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and those from the University of Western Australia conducted a survey in various cities from Australia and the United States. Around 2,700 people participated in the study.
The concerned study pointed out that besides the dog, even pet cats and rabbits can offer the same benefits to their owners.
Respondents said they get the opportunity to meet and interact with their neighbors more often due to their pets. They pointed out that their beautiful looking canine companion often attracts strangers as well. On the other hand, non-pet owners said they meet their neighbors just once in a while.
One of the researchers behind this study, the University of Western Australia’s associate professor-Dr. Lisa Wood interacted with reporters. She said pets indirectly help in getting a social and emotional support.
